The Old College
Try: By focusing on students at risk of
dropping out, donors are finding ways to move
the needle on college graduation rates.
"Forty-three. That’s the percentage of college
freshmen who will drop out of school before
getting a bachelor’s degree. Community
colleges—even worse. There, over 69 percent of
students will drop out before receiving a
credential. That means only 57 percent of
college freshmen—and a mere 31 percent of
first-years in junior college—will earn the
degree they ostensibly set out to obtain. By any
measure, that’s a failing grade.

The SAAB organization launches "SAAB Toledo Book Club"
The
SAAB Toledo Book Club has been established
by National SAAB Founder / CEO Dr. Tyrone Bledsoe to promote
a culture of "Readership" among our young
males of color. The
SAAB Toledo Book Club is the first
SAAB Book Club in the country - created to benefit
Toledo
SAAB Chapter members.
This new program has been designed on the
basis of evidence from many studies that indicate
African American male
populations struggle in the area of reading. Research also shows that reading as a teen leads to success.

Gridiron Smith and Lumina View
Education Gap
Through Racial Lens
Sixty
percent of
Americans will have high-quality college
degrees and credentials by 2025 if
Lumina
Foundation’s next decade and a half of grantmaking
is successful. The foundation’s ambitious goal targets
students of all races, but Lumina Senior Program Officer
Tina Gridiron Smith says it also presents an opportunity
to address the educational achievement gap between
students of color and white students.
The gap
and its effects are quite stark. According to a
2006 U.S.
Department of Education report,
the average graduation rate for whites is 18% greater
than that of African Americans and 12% greater than that
of Latinos. If the educational gap were narrowed or
eliminated, higher earnings from better educated African
Americans and Latinos would have increased the gross
domestic product last year by up to $525 billion,
according to an
April study by McKinsey and Company.
